Bodega is open year round and keeps the same slow pace in every season. What changes is what you see: wildflowers in spring, fog off the coast in summer, harvest light in fall, and the quietest streets of the year in winter.
The village looks different across the year but never changes its rhythm. Here is what each season brings, drawn from the same notes on our visit guide.
Spring is mild, and the hills around the village green up before the summer dry sets in. Wildflowers come out along the roadsides and open hillsides. Spring also runs through the tail of gray whale season: the whales pass Bodega Head, on the coast about eight miles west, from roughly January through May.
Summer days are warm inland, but the coast pulls fog east off Bodega Bay, so mornings and evenings in the village can stay cool and grey. Photographers tend to work with that fog rather than against it. Summer also holds the village's one big day: The Big Event, held the first Sunday in August, when the community stages what the organizers call Sonoma County's shortest parade, followed by a barbecue at the Casino Bar & Grill and live music that raises money for the Bodega Volunteer Fire Department.
Fall is harvest season across Sonoma County, and the village sees fewer visitors than in summer. It is a good stretch for an unhurried walk through the historic core, with daylight hours still long enough for photography of the buildings.
Winter is the quietest season in Bodega, with the shortest days and the chance of rain. The businesses stay open year round, and the village keeps its ordinary working life whether or not visitors come. Gray whale season begins again in January, so a winter trip can pair empty village streets with whale watching out at Bodega Head.
For the buildings themselves, daylight hours are best, and morning fog makes for the most atmospheric photographs. Most of the film sites, including the Potter Schoolhouse schoolyard and St. Teresa of Avila Church, are the same ones mapped on The Birds and listed among the village attractions.
